Disabling your touch screen can be useful to prevent accidental touches, save battery life, or troubleshoot issues like a unresponsive or "ghost-touching" display. Here are the most effective methods to turn it off on a Windows PC.

Method 1: Using Device Manager (The Most Common Method)

This is the standard and most reliable software method.

  1. Open Device Manager:

    • Right-click the Start button or press Win + X on your keyboard.

    • Select Device Manager from the menu.

  2. Locate the Touch Screen Driver:

    • In the Device Manager window, expand the category called Human Interface Devices.

    • Look for an entry related to your touch screen. It is often named "HID-compliant touch screen," but it might also include the manufacturer's name like "ELAN," "Synaptics," or "Goodix."

  3. Disable the Device:

    • Right-click on the correct touch screen device.

    • Select Disable device from the context menu.

    • Click Yes to confirm the warning. The device will now have a black downward arrow icon, indicating it is disabled.

To Re-enable: Simply right-click the same device and select Enable device.

Method 2: Using Windows Settings (Available on Some Devices)

Some modern 2-in-1 laptops and tablets offer a simpler toggle.

  1. Open the Settings app (press Win + I).

  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices > Touch.

  3. If available, you will see a toggle for "Touch". Switch it to Off.

Note: If you don't see this option, your PC manufacturer does not support this setting, and you should use Method 1.

Method 3: Updating or Rolling Back the Driver (For Troubleshooting)

If your screen is malfunctioning, try updating the driver.

  1. In Device Manager (see Method 1), right-click the touch screen device.

  2. Select Update driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.

  3. If the issue started after an update, choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver (if available).

Method 4: Disabling via BIOS/UEFI (The Permanent Solution)

For a firmware-level disable that persists before Windows even loads:

  1. Reboot your PC and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup (common keys: F2, Del, F10, Esc during startup).

  2. Navigate to the Advanced or Configuration tab (varies by manufacturer).

  3. Look for an option like Touch Screen InterfaceTablet Mode, or Touch Support.

  4. Set it to Disabled.

  5. Save and Exit (usually F10).

To Re-enable: You must re-enter the BIOS and re-enable the same setting.

Important Notes

  • Identify the Correct Driver: If unsure which device is the touch screen in Device Manager, you can disable candidates one by one until touch input stops.

  • A Physical Connection: Remember, these are software solutions. If the screen has physical damage, it may need repair.

  • Have a Mouse Ready: Ensure you have a mouse connected before disabling the touch screen, as it will become your primary navigation tool.

By following these steps, you can easily disable your touch screen and regain control over your PC's input methods.
